KOHL EYES

Bengali Women wear kohl- sometimes to decorate their eyes, but most of the time to hide the black bruises of their lives. Women can hide pain under the shades of their eyes for a long time like shadows; eye shadows.

Sometimes those shadows are longer than trees. Those shadow-strewn paths are longer than the paths of their own lives.
It's not just the bruises under her eyes that a Bengali woman must hide, but also the whip marks on her back, under blouse folds and skin, where no one else can see.
